Meaning:

  1. The sacred water flowing from Shiva’s matted hair and drenching his neck, is like a garland of moving serpents. As he dances the Tandava, let that Lord Shiva, who grants auspiciousness, bless us with prosperity.

  2. The water from the celestial river, swirling in his matted hair, shines on his forehead. As the fire burns on his fierce face, and the crescent moon adorns his head, may Lord Shiva, who performs the cosmic dance, bless us always.

  3. The daughter of the mountain king, absorbed in his dance, enjoys the great joy of union. May we always find our delight in the compassionate glances of the Lord, who wears the sky as his garment.

  4. His hair is adorned with serpents, and their jewels shine like a myriad of lights. The celestial damsels are smeared with fragrant kumkum from the inner recesses of the universe. May our minds always dwell in the wonder of the Lord, who supports all beings.

  5. The dust from the flowers of the heavenly regions, which decorates the feet of Lord Shiva, is like a cloud of incense. He who has a garland of snakes, and who wears the crescent moon, may he bestow upon us prosperity and auspiciousness.

  6. His forehead is brilliantly illuminated with the flames from the sacrificial fire. He consumes the arrows of Kamadeva (the god of love), and he is revered by all the celestial beings. With his matted hair crowned with the moon, may Lord Shiva’s blessings be upon us.

  7. His fierce forehead bears the fire that consumes the offerings. The beautiful daughter of the mountain king, adorns herself with artistic designs on her breasts. May the three-eyed Lord, who is the master of all, delight our minds.

  8. His neck, dark as a cluster of new clouds, is suffused with the water from the Ganges. He holds the moon, a friend of the Chakora bird, on his head. May that Lord, who supports the universe, bless us with prosperity.

  9. I bow to him who destroys desire, who vanquishes the cities, who ends the cycle of birth and death, who shatters the offerings of the Yagna, who destroys the demons, and who crushes the god of death.

  10. May the great Lord, who is the essence of all that is auspicious, and who radiates the sweetness of a blooming garden, bless us. He destroys the god of love, the lord of cities, the lord of sacrifices, the elephant demon, and the blind demon.

  11. May Shiva, whose dancing arms are adorned with moving snakes, whose fierce forehead bears the sacrificial fire, and whose drums beat with the rhythm of creation, bless us always.

  12. When shall I worship Lord Shiva, with equal reverence for the bed of stones or flowers, for gold or dust, for friends or enemies, for grass or lotus, for the king or commoner, for everything being the same?

  13. When shall I, free from delusion, live in the hollow of a tree in the forest, always meditating on Lord Shiva, with a matted head, unblinking eyes, and the moon on his forehead, chanting “Shiva,” and being happy?

  14. Anyone who recites this supreme hymn, which is pure and uplifting, will attain the purest state. Devotees who sincerely worship Lord Shiva and contemplate him will reach a high state and not fall into delusion.

  15. During the evening prayers, one who recites this hymn sung by Ravana at the time of Shiva’s worship, will be blessed by Shiva with prosperity, wealth, and a happy life.
